Are You Marketing Yourself In the Right Rooms?

Audria Richmond®:

Hello everyone. This is Audria Richmond® and I would like to welcome you to Unclown Insider number 4. We had to skip number 3 because I was under the weather. So if you've been paying attention and follow along with the newsletter, I know you're excited to get this one. But I really like the fact that I had an opportunity to take a break because I think a lot of times we beat ourselves up.

Audria Richmond®:

Like, oh, I have this, you know, social media schedule and I need to stick to it. And if I don't stick to it, I'm a loser, I'm inconsistent. And all of that stuff is trash. It is BS, and it doesn't matter. So, today, I wanna talk to you guys about are you marketing yourself and showing up in the right rooms?

Audria Richmond®:

So I recently just came back from a very, very intense training on how to facilitate, corporate training. And it wasn't just about, in my opinion, it wasn't just about getting corporate clients and really understanding how to facilitate in a corporate environment, I actually learned a lot of skills on how to make myself a better teacher and facilitator for my workshops and retreats and things like that and my own personal events, not just, you know, going in and training with corporate. And one of the things that I immediately, like, noticed when I walked in the room was that I was the youngest person in the room. And it was about 17 of us. Each person spent about $75100 to be in the room.

Audria Richmond®:

And it was a very, very high level group of women. And we had one guy. It seems like when I go to events, it's always that one guy who gets it and really is jumping ahead of the curve. And, anyway so yeah. So I'm at this event, and one of the things I noticed is that I'm the youngest person.

Audria Richmond®:

And it made me think, you know, a lot of people are always talking trash about millennials and how we don't show up and how we're not, you know, we're irresponsible and so on and so forth. But here I am as a millennial. I'm in this room, and I'm here dedicated to my success because I am a leader, and I'm here to support my tribe and my community. So it was very interesting to see the dynamics, of this room. But pretty much everyone in this room was over, 40.

Audria Richmond®:

And, you know, one of the things I noticed was that I was in a different room, and not just different room as in age. Right? Because if we take age out out of the equation, it really doesn't matter. Right? Because I've been around some very, very young intelligent people and as well as older people.

Audria Richmond®:

And so and I am by no means saying that if you are over 40, you are old. Okay? So don't come for me. I'm just speaking, out of context. Okay?

Audria Richmond®:

So, anyway, at this event, one of the things I noticed was that everyone there had a common object to be able to learn these facilitation skills. But another thing I noticed was that I could play in that room. Let me explain what that means. I am in this room and for for a minute I felt like, oh man, you know, I'm in this room with all of these big time superstars and I'm like, you know, downplaying myself as if I didn't have my stuff together. And the truth of the matter is I really do have my stuff together as a published author, as a very established business owner, as a person who understands business and marketing on all fronts.

Audria Richmond®:

And so I really downplayed myself before going into this room because I felt like, oh, it's a new room. I'm really not that, enlightened on the topic. So I kinda downplayed myself and we do that a lot. Right? And so once I got over over myself and really owned the fact that I should be here and I should be in this room, I realized very quickly that I have been marketing in the wrong rooms.

Audria Richmond®:

And so it's one thing to go out and go to different events, industry events, but I have typically, went to events that are very common. Right? Like, I might go to an event that's, like, always women empowerment and women events. Or I might go to an events that are always Internet marketing or online marketing related. And one of the things that I realized is that I do not have that much diversity in my event selection.

Audria Richmond®:

I've been to some very amazing events. I pre I do a pretty good job of picking events, but I haven't done a good job at going to more diverse events. And it it was very clear how my I saw a gap, if you would. Like, a a opportunity for me to really expand and take my brand to the next level. And a lot of it has to do with, me feeling like, oh, I'm not ready.

Audria Richmond®:

Oh, I'm not ready. And it would probably explain why it took me so long to get into the room that I was in this past week. And what I just feel like a lot of the times we downplay ourselves when we really shouldn't, and that's not necessarily cool, you know, when you really think about it. And so I have made a a dedication to myself. You know, people are always talking about diversity inclusion and including, you know, people of color and different opportunities and things like that.

Audria Richmond®:

And one of the things that I I want to make sure that you all understand is that diversity inclusion is also you diversifying yourself in other groups and other events and other opportunities and investing in programs that you probably don't think you need, but you really, really, really, really need. Or going into rooms where you feel like, oh, I'm not there yet. Right? Like, we really need to get over this mental block around I'm not there yet. Like, what the hell does that even really mean when you really think about it?

Audria Richmond®:

I'm not there yet. I mean, if you was there, I don't know. But you get what I hope y'all get what I'm saying. And hopefully, I don't sound like I'm rambling. I'm just, like, really expressing how I felt this past week.

Audria Richmond®:

And once the week came to a conclusion, I felt really empowered. I felt inspired. And I want you all to know that you could your business may not be growing the way you want it to or you may not be getting known like you want to because you are in the wrong rooms. You're going to rooms where you know you can dominate. You're going into rooms where you know that you are doing way better than other people.

Audria Richmond®:

And you're staying away from events that you don't think that you're ready for. You're staying away from events that you don't think that you are, prepared for. And I'm here to tell you that we have to put some diversity, in our events, in the rooms that we're going to, if we plan to actually market our sales. And there were so much opportunity in that room. And, you know, one of the disadvantages to going to, events that are, I guess you can say, events that you know that you can dominate in when you go to rooms like that, you're not getting any smarter doing that.

Audria Richmond®:

You get what I'm saying? Like, going to events where, you know, you know all of the information, you know, everything that's being taught. You've been there, heard that, or whatever the case may be, and you downplay the fact that you need to be going into rooms where certain topics are unfamiliar to you. And even if it's not super unfamiliar, you're you don't really understand the the entire depth of that conversation or whatever is being that's been going on. I'll give you a prime example.

Audria Richmond®:

When she was teaching the training, I was like, oh, I know how to facilitate. Blah blah blah. Like, I've I've done retreats. I've done this. I've done that.

Audria Richmond®:

And, you know, one thing that's really, really great about me in general is that I am always wanting to learn. I always wanna learn. I do not think I'm a know it all. I think that I have studied a lot, but I definitely don't know. I know for a fact that I'm not a know it all.

Audria Richmond®:

Right? And one of the things that I immediately took away from the training was that I could make my my workshops and my facilitation and my retreats more interactive. I learned how adults learn. I learn how to negotiate and debrief with executives. I learn how to facilitate.

Audria Richmond®:

And, really, I learn some awesome skills for licensing, my content, which is one of my, strategies I wanna do this year or probably next year. And I just learned a lot. So I'm saying all of this to say, that way I don't keep going off on a deep end, is that are you marketing yourself and showing up in the right rooms? Like the whatever events you have on your schedule, look at those events and ask yourself, are my ideal audience gonna be in there? Is this a room where I would be intimidated to go in?

Audria Richmond®:

And if you're not going to any events that attempt intimidate you, and if you're not going to any events where, you know, you're not gonna be the smartest person in the room, then you're not going to the right events. And I'm not just talking to you. I'm talking to me too. So let me know in the comments how you plan to show up in the right rooms and how you plan to diversify the rooms that you are in.
